“Lagos APC Chieftain Urges Obasa to Move On and Focus on Legislative Duties”
Fouad Oki, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has called on Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, to move beyond the leadership struggle and focus on serving his constituency.
Obasa, who was ousted last week, insists he remains the Speaker, arguing that his impeachment was carried out with a “fake mace.” However, his successor, Mojisola Meranda, formally assumed the role of Speaker on Monday.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oki urged Obasa to let go of any ambitions to reclaim the speakership and return to his core responsibility as a lawmaker. “The matters concerning the Lagos Assembly are now in the past. What has happened is a reflection of the party’s organization and its unwritten conventions,” Oki explained.
Oki emphasized that the situation demonstrated the importance of hierarchy, control, and checks and balances within Lagos politics. He advised Obasa to either resign or embrace his legislative role just like any other elected representative.
“The best path forward for him is either to accept the reality and continue fulfilling his responsibilities as a legislator or step aside for new leadership,” Oki said. “The politics of Lagos is about moving forward, and this chapter has closed.”
For Oki, the episode is a reminder of the transient nature of political power. “He should carry on with his job of making laws for the good people of Lagos. Nothing lasts forever, and it’s time to move on,” Oki concluded.
