Lagos Assembly Pledges Loyalty to Tinubu Amid Obasa’s Ouster
In what seems like an orchestrated display of loyalty, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly gathered on Thursday, pledging unwavering support to President Bola Tinubu for his “impressive achievements” under the Renewed Hope Agenda. But is this genuine allegiance or just a well-timed political move?
The assembly, convening for its resumed plenary barely a month after the dramatic removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, was quick to shower praises on Tinubu. Notably, Obasa was a glaring absentee from the session, sparking speculation about his fallout with the president’s camp. Was the assembly’s renewed unity a signal of loyalty to Tinubu, or was it a political maneuver designed to fortify positions in the wake of Obasa’s controversial exit?
Lawmaker Abiodun Tobun led the charge, touting the government’s success in reducing the cost of living and strengthening the naira. But his words felt more like a carefully crafted script than an authentic endorsement. “The cost of living has reduced, and the naira has appreciated,” Tobun proclaimed, omitting the reality that many Nigerians are still grappling with rising inflation. Still, the assembly’s chorus of approval was hard to ignore.
Eti Osa representative, Gbolahan Yishawu, jumped on the bandwagon, lauding the President’s economic policies and even thanking First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her support of homegrown farming. It’s clear that praise for the president is on the assembly’s agenda, but is it driven by genuine admiration or by political ambition?
The Majority Leader, Temitope Adewale, went as far as saying that every lawmaker owed their allegiance to Tinubu, even claiming the president had personally groomed many politicians in the state. This strong show of loyalty raises eyebrows—could this be an attempt to position themselves as the true political heirs in Lagos, especially as Obasa, once the political kingpin, faces a tough future?
As the session concluded, the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, echoed the praises, emphasizing Tinubu’s leadership. The house resolved to write a letter to the president, showering him with further accolades for his “courageous leadership.”
But the question remains: Is this outpouring of loyalty genuine, or just an attempt to secure favor in a politically charged climate? With the shadow of Obasa’s removal looming large, one can’t help but wonder—are these lawmakers truly committed to Tinubu, or are they simply maneuvering to stay in power?
