Lassa Fever: NCDC and State Government Unite to Combat Outbreak

Dr. Olubunmi Olopha, the leader of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) team, addressed state government officials regarding the ongoing Lassa fever outbreak. Olopha revealed that the NCDC has deployed a team of experts to assist the state in managing the outbreak effectively.

Since the outbreak was reported, less than 90 out of around 200 suspected cases have been confirmed. This has prompted a closer collaboration between the NCDC and the state government to confront the situation head-on.

Olopha also appealed to healthcare providers to promptly refer suspected cases to appropriate medical facilities to reduce the risk of fatalities.

State Government and NCDC Team Up to Address Lassa Fever Concerns

The Head of the State Government team, Bayo Philip, who also serves as the Head of Civil Service, reassured the public of the government’s commitment to combating Lassa fever and other diseases. He urged relevant state ministries, including those of Health, Agriculture, and Environment, to take swift action to curb the annual recurrence of Lassa fever.

Philip also emphasized the importance of involving private healthcare practitioners in the efforts, as well as encouraging traditional rulers and religious leaders to work with the government to ensure residents adopt hygienic practices in handling food.
