Lawyers Accuse NBA President Of Being ‘Pro-Government,’ Claim Maikyau Doesn’t Speak For All Lawyers Over Planned Peaceful Protests
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, has come under fire from several Nigerian lawyers over his appeal for restraint and dialogue in light of planned nationwide peaceful protests against the country’s economic hardships and insecurity. The lawyers argue that Maikyau does not speak for all Nigerian lawyers regarding the planned protests.
One lawyer questioned the NBA’s stance, saying, “The NBA is urging the nation to have a rethink about exercising its right to protest? He needs to be given a ministerial appointment; he has tried for this government.” This sentiment was echoed by others who criticized the NBA for appearing to be pro-government.
A senior lawyer suggested amending the NBA Constitution, stating, “The provision in the NBA Constitution that says the President is the chief spokesperson for the association should be amended as it can easily be subjected to abuse. I am of the view that NEC or the Executive Committee should issue statements of this nature.” Another lawyer commented, “I think only a Constitution amendment can stop the NBA President from speaking for the Bar.”
The perceived pro-government position of the NBA has led to growing discontent among lawyers. A senior lawyer remarked, “Why can’t Nigerian politicians understand the difference between protest and revolution? The guilty fears where there’s no accusations. It goes to show that Nigerians don’t even really know the full extent of the evils and corruption done and perpetrated against this Great and Blessed nation by these people.”
A lawyer expressed disappointment in the NBA President, saying, “Sincerely, I am not in support of this comment by the President. It’s beginning to appear that NBA is Pro-Government. I used to think that we are a pressure group. SMH! NBA’s familiar voice. It always finds its voice in favour of the government.”
Another lawyer questioned the NBA’s efforts in promoting good governance: “I’m at a loss here. YC SAN chronicled the litany of letters he wrote Mr. President, till date, little or no positive success has been achieved. Does that not negate this? NBA should tell Nigerians one thing they have done to instil good governance. I will help them, nothing.”
A young lawyer expressed disappointment in Maikyau, stating, “Maikyau has always been a disappointment, so I’m very far from surprised. What he laboured to tell us in his unending letter is that there’s absolutely no way Nigerians can ever protest without it degenerating to something else. One would have thought that he would be calling on government to ensure that hoodlums don’t hijack the process.”
As the debate continues, some lawyers are placing their hopes in the incoming NBA president. One lawyer said, “I sincerely hope Afam Osigwe is courageous enough to act as an NBA president.”
Amidst the controversy, the NBA Ikorodu Branch has taken proactive measures to ensure the protection of human rights during the planned protests. In a letter addressed to the branch’s committee coordinators, alternates, and members, Vice Chairman and Head of the Human Rights Committee, Olajide Abiodun, outlined an action plan.
The plan includes being on high alert, making regular visits to police stations to prevent human rights violations, wearing necessary vests and carrying identity cards, working in teams for safety, and visiting arrested individuals within 24 hours to ensure their rights are upheld.
The controversy surrounding the NBA President’s stance on the planned nationwide protests has exposed a growing rift between the association and its members, with many lawyers accusing the NBA of failing to adequately represent their interests and advocate for good governance in Nigeria. As local branches take proactive measures to protect citizens’ rights, the NBA leadership faces increasing pressure to align with the concerns of its members and the public.
