Mahdi Shehu in DSS Custody After Sharing Viral Video on French Military Base
Mahdi Shehu, a prominent activist and political commentator based in Kaduna, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over the circulation of a viral video. The video, which suggested that the Nigerian government was planning to allow the establishment of a French military base in the North-West, drew national security concerns. Although Shehu deleted the video after its widespread circulation, the damage had already been done.
Security sources, including renowned counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, have confirmed that Shehu is currently in DSS custody in Kaduna. It is reported that Shehu will soon be arraigned in court, with authorities ensuring that his legal rights are respected during his detention. However, the DSS has yet to release an official statement about the arrest.
Shehu’s lawyer, Mustapha Abubakar, was notified of the arrest by Shehu’s family but has not been able to provide further details, as he is not in Kaduna at the moment. The arrest follows a previous incident in February, when Shehu was detained by the police in Abuja. That arrest was allegedly linked to a petition filed by the law office of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and related to Shehu’s efforts to demand accountability from Malami and members of the former Buhari administration.
As this situation unfolds, the public remains keenly interested in the legal proceedings that will follow.
