Maiduguri, the Borno State capital has been submerged in flood after the Alau Dam collapsed on Tuesday morning.
The United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council (UNHCR) and residents of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) described the flood as the city’s worst experience when compared to the flood that swept the city in 1994.
The flood has rendered many homeless as they have had to flee their homes to dry lands to avoid being trapped in the flood.
The Shehu’s Palace, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo were some of the public infrastructure submerged by flood.
A prison wall located along the Custom area was also broken by flood as some inmates allegedly drowned while several others escaped for their lives.
