Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) operating under Sector 3 in Mongunu have successfully intercepted a suspected terrorist courier transporting Improvised Explosive Device (IED)-making materials intended for a planned attack in Borno State. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Murktar Alhaji Chari, was arrested on Thursday after a joint operation by the MNJTF and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
A statement from Lt-Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the Chief Military Information Officer of the MNJTF, revealed that Chari was transporting the materials to Gubio Local Government Area, where the explosives were to be used in an attack on MNJTF troops. The intercepted materials included several IED components such as four empty 12kg cylinders, one empty 6kg cylinder, two carburettor gas canisters, two pressure regulators, and a hose.
Intelligence reports suggested that the explosives were meant for a terrorist group planning a retaliatory strike following recent losses, including the deaths of several members and the seizure of a large weapons cache. The timely interception of Chari and his materials has disrupted the planned attack, significantly hindering the terrorist group’s operational capabilities.
The suspect is currently in custody and cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation. The Force Commander of the MNJTF, Maj-Gen. Ibrahim Ali, praised the vigilance and professionalism of the troops and CJTF, reaffirming the MNJTF’s commitment to fighting terrorism and ensuring the safety of the region.
