Major: Kwankwaso Faction’s Expulsion Ratified at NNPP Convention
The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Major, has firmly stated that the faction led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso remains expelled from the party, following a recent national convention.
The Kwankwaso faction had earlier rejected the convention that led to Major’s election, asserting that it was illegitimate and maintaining that Dr. Ajuji Ahmed was the only recognized National Chairman, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, referred to Major’s faction as a “renegade group.”
However, in a press conference held in Abuja on Saturday, Major defended the legality of the convention, citing a recent court ruling as the basis for its legitimacy.
“The recent judgement of the Abia High Court, dated 1st November 2024, unequivocally compelled INEC to hand over the party to its Board of Trustees, led by Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, pending the resolution of all issues in court. You also recall that the same judgement mandated the BOT to activate all other organs of the party as contained in the party’s constitution (2022 as amended),” Major explained.
He further outlined the series of congresses that began on January 13, 2024, starting from the ward level and proceeding through local government, state, and zonal congresses. These were followed by the national convention on February 4, 2025, which Major noted was held after an interim court order had expired.
Key outcomes of the convention included the ratification of congresses held from ward to zonal levels, the expulsion of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima, and the entire Kwankwassiya group from the party, and the election of a new National Working Committee led by Major as National Chairman.
“Other decisions included the review of the party’s finances, rejection of the purported new logo, and approval to revert to the original logo depicting the basket of fruits on the Nigerian map,” Major added.
Major also pointed out that the Dr. Aniebonam-led BOT had fulfilled its responsibilities as per the Abia High Court’s directive, and all relevant submissions had been made to INEC. He expressed confidence that INEC would soon reflect the changes in its records.
“We once again call on the remaining remnants of the Kwankwassiya group to peacefully exit our party, as their leaders are currently doing,” Major concluded.
