Marine Police Officer Missing After Violent Sea Pirate Attack in Akwa Ibom

One Marine Police officer is missing, and two others have been injured following a violent attack by suspected Sea Pirates on the Akwa Ibom coastal waters. The assault took place along the Oron-Calabar waterways, where the Marine Police Patrol Team (MPPT) was ambushed by a heavily armed group of criminals.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command confirmed the attack, revealing that the patrol team, which had fewer personnel, was ambushed by about 24 pirates operating in three speedboats. Despite the overwhelming numerical disadvantage, the police officers put up a courageous fight, but the ensuing gun battle resulted in losses for the force.

In a statement by DSP Timfon John, spokesperson for the Akwa Ibom Police, it was disclosed that two officers, Inspector Sunday Usuyak and Inspector Edet Enenyi, sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving medical care. However, one officer, Inspector Udi Emenyi, remains unaccounted for, sparking urgent efforts to locate and rescue him.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, has swiftly mobilized tactical units, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies, to comb the area in search of the missing officer and to track down the pirates responsible for the attack. The Akwa Ibom Police has pledged to leave no stone unturned in its pursuit of justice, stating, “Our waterways will not be a safe haven for criminals.”

The police are calling on members of the public to provide any information that could help in apprehending the suspects and ensuring the safety of the region’s waterways.
