A bomb explosion occurred in the early hours of Saturday night in the Umuneke community, Mbieri, located in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State. The explosion, which targeted a newly completed family house, completely reduced it to rubble, though miraculously no casualties were reported.
According to a source identified as Iyke Njoku, the blast was deafening. “The sound was massive. We waited a while, but when we didn’t hear any screams or see any movement, we decided to check. That’s when we found the house in ruins,” Njoku explained.
The house, a bungalow, had been newly completed by a couple who were planning to move in by February. It is now a painful reminder of the devastation, with their dream home destroyed before they could even settle in. “It is so painful that all their efforts have become a waste because they can’t move in as planned,” Njoku added.
Another resident, Emma Emeka, described how the explosion jolted them from sleep. “We heard a massive sound, like an explosion. When we rushed out, we saw the newly built bungalow destroyed. It happened so fast, and no one saw what caused it or who was behind it,” Emeka said.
He went on to say, “The couple worked hard to complete the building and were looking forward to moving in this year. Now, they can’t do so. People from neighboring villages even heard the blast and wondered where it came from. We all slept with one eye open, fearing an attack.”
Despite several attempts, the state police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, could not be reached for comment as his number was unavailable. The community remains in shock, with residents uncertain about what led to the explosion and who may be responsible.
