Minister Idris Calls for Constructive Criticism from Emir Sanusi
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has stated that the Federal Government does not require the approval of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for its policies, which are designed to improve the lives of Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the minister acknowledged that Sanusi, like every Nigerian, has the right to express opinions, whether in support or criticism of government actions. However, Idris expressed surprise that someone from an institution promoting fairness and justice would publicly admit to withholding the truth for personal reasons, driven by perceived antagonism.
Idris further emphasized that Nigeria is at a critical juncture, where bold reforms are needed to address long-standing economic challenges. The administration, according to the minister, has implemented necessary and transformative reforms, such as the unification of exchange rates and the removal of the fuel subsidy, to secure Nigeria’s long-term growth, as Sanusi himself has previously advocated.
“These reforms, though painful in the short term, are crucial for Nigeria’s future stability,” Idris said. “The unification of exchange rates has bolstered investor confidence, increased foreign reserves, and helped shield the country from external economic shocks. The removal of the fuel subsidy has freed up critical resources, allowing the government to invest in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.”
The minister expressed disappointment that reforms, widely recognized by global experts, including Sanusi, as vital for Nigeria’s future, are now being subtly condemned due to shifting loyalties.
Idris stressed that as a leader, Sanusi has a unique responsibility to contribute positively to the nation’s development, rather than undermining reforms that are aimed at collective progress. He urged the Emir to rise above personal and partisan interests and prioritize the national interest.
“Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. Esteemed leaders should avoid rhetoric that erodes public trust. Instead, they should champion the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria,” the minister said.
He reiterated that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration remains steadfast in its mission to lead Nigeria toward economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity. The government remains open to constructive dialogue while prioritizing the interests of Nigerians above all else.
