“Mojisola Meranda Sworn in as Lagos Speaker Amidst Strong Legislative Support”
Mojisola Meranda has officially assumed the position of Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a new chapter in the state’s legislative leadership. Meranda, who took office amidst much fanfare, was accompanied by fellow lawmakers, except for former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was notably absent.
During the formal ceremony, Meranda and the lawmakers posed for photographs, signifying their united support for her leadership. In a show of solidarity, the legislators enthusiastically praised the new Speaker, chanting, “Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us. You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker.” They continued their chant, “Speak for Lagos. Continue with your work,” underscoring their commitment to her leadership.
Following the ceremony, Meranda, with the lawmakers by her side, moved to her official office, where they offered intense prayers for her as she settled into her new role. The occasion was marked by a sense of optimism and unity among the members.
However, the celebration comes on the heels of former Speaker Obasa’s claim that his removal from office was unconstitutional and lacked due process, which has sparked some controversy within the legislative body.
To ensure security and smooth operations, heightened measures have been implemented around the Lagos State House of Assembly. A notice issued by Omotayo Adekemi, on behalf of Acting Clerk Mr. Taiwo Ottun, announced that all staff and legislative aides must present valid identification cards to access the premises. Anyone without proper ID will be denied entry.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has assured the public that it will maintain peace and order around the assembly and throughout the state. Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olawale, emphasized that while the police are not involved in the Assembly’s internal matters, they will continue to ensure calm around the premises and throughout Lagos.
This transition in leadership reflects a crucial moment for the Lagos State House of Assembly, as Meranda steps into her new role amidst political tensions and public scrutiny.
