MTN Nigeria Seeks 100% Tariff Rise, But Approval Remains Uncertain, Says CEO
MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive, Karl Toriola, revealed that the telecommunications giant has submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) requesting a 100% increase in service tariffs. He made this disclosure during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday.
Despite the proposal, Toriola expressed uncertainty about whether the Nigerian Communications Commission, the country’s telecom regulatory body, would approve the proposed hike due to the ongoing economic challenges in the country.
“We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 percent tariff increases to regulators,” Toriola said. “I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country.”
The proposal comes amidst increasing speculation that telecom service tariffs may be raised in Nigeria in 2025. This follows recent comments by the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, who threatened a potential shutdown of telecom operations unless tariffs are increased. However, telecom subscribers have voiced strong opposition to any potential tariff hike.
