Murder of Princess Mediatrix Chigbo: “Enough is Enough: FIDA Abuja Submits Demand Letter for Immediate Action Against “One Chance Robbers”
The Abuja Branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has strongly condemned the brutal murder of its esteemed member, Princess Mediatrix Chigbo, a senior legal practitioner and dedicated advocate for justice, whose lifeless body was discovered along a roadside in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Reports indicate that she was killed by suspected “one-chance” robbers on her way from a church activity.
In the letter to FCT Minister, FIDA Abuja described the killing as “heinous and dastardly” and expressed deep grief over the loss of a colleague who devoted her life to defending justice. The organization noted that the murder is part of a disturbing pattern of “one-chance” operations, rapid, opportunistic attacks targeting commuters, often women, across Abuja.
FIDA Abuja Chairperson, Chioma U. Onyenucheya-Uko, personally submitted the demand letter at the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s office, urging urgent action to protect citizens and prevent further tragedies.
The organization’s demands include:
To the FCT Administration (FCTA):
Declare a security emergency to combat the menace of “one-chance” criminal operators in the FCT.
Establish and publicly unveil a multi-agency task force dedicated to dismantling these criminal networks.
Install and activate functional CCTV surveillance along major transport corridors, drop-off points, and identified hotspots.
Regulate and monitor commercial transportation, ensuring proper registration, identification, and oversight of public and informal transport operators.
FIDA Abuja further called on all relevant security agencies to improve intelligence-led patrols, conduct stop-and-search operations, investigate and prosecute offenders promptly, and provide regular public updates to restore confidence in public safety. The organization also urged the justice sector to ensure speedy disposition of cases arising from these crimes so that justice is not only done but also seen to be done.
Chairperson Onyenucheya-Uko emphasized: “The safety of citizens is not optional, it is a constitutional obligation. The murder of officers of the court on the streets of the nation’s capital sends a chilling message, especially to women and vulnerable commuters. FIDA Abuja will not remain silent. Enough is enough.”
FIDA Abuja vowed to continue advocacy and, where necessary, pursue strategic legal actions to hold authorities accountable and prevent further loss of life. The organization stressed that honoring the memory of Princess Mediatrix Chigbo means demanding tangible steps to end the scourge of street crimes in the FCT.
