“Nasir El-Rufai Denies Defection to PDP, Threatens Legal Action
Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna state, has strongly denied rumors circulating about his defection to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) or any other political party. The former governor dismissed the claims as false and threatened legal action against those spreading the misinformation.
El-Rufai, taking to his verified X page, urged the public to ignore the reports, labeling them as “patent lies.” He further stated, “Please disregard the patent lies and rumours about my political affiliation. I have referred the lead peddlers of the fake news for further action by my lawyers.”
An unnamed aide of the former governor, speaking in a telephone interview, also debunked the rumors. The aide described the alleged defection as nothing more than the work of “mischief makers” and emphasized that El-Rufai had not joined the PDP or any other party. “It is the handwork of mischief makers. I don’t want to discuss the mischief maker’s social media posts, but the report is false. The former governor did not join PDP or any other party,” the aide clarified.
The rumors gained traction over the weekend, with certain online platforms and social media users reporting that El-Rufai had rejoined the PDP to contest for the presidency in 2027. The reports even claimed that El-Rufai had collected his PDP membership card from Ungwan Sarki, a locality in Kaduna North. However, these claims have been swiftly rejected by the former governor and his team.
