NATIONAL Executive Committee (NEC) of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has approved July 20 for election of officers as proposed by the Electoral Committee (ECNBA).
It ratified publication of the preliminary notice and eletion guidelines.
Officers will be elected to succeed Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) and his executive.
Their tenure will end after this year’s annual general conference (AGC) in Lagos from August 23 to 30.
NBA NEC approved creation of Eti-Osa Branch and reiterated its approval for the new Surulere Branch.
Surulere Branch is anchored on the establishment of Surulere/Yaba Judicial Division by chief judge of Lagos.
NEC authorised the constitution of caretaker committees for Eti-Osa and Surulere to organise branch elections.
These were part of the communiqué issued at the close of NBA’s first quarterly NEC meeting in Jos, Plateau State.
It condemned actions of the leadership of the Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL), which it said undermined the president and council.
“Consequently, NEC directed removal of members of the Executive Committee of SPIDEL.
“NEC also ratified all actions taken by the president with respect to SPIDEL and directed that all actions filed by John Aikpoko-Martins and Funmi Adeogun, purportedly on behalf of NBA-SPIDEL be discontinued,” the communiqué said.
NBA NEC condemned the attitude of members nominated into its statutory bodies, saying their actions or inactions were undermining the association’s interests.
It directed that nominees in statutory bodies report their activities to the council through NBA president.
NEC ratified and approved constitution of NBA Remuneration Implementation Committee chaired by Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN).
It condemned an unrecognised group parading as officers of NBA Bori Branch.
NEC directed that a letter be written to chief judge of Rivers State recognising only the elected officers led by Idris Abayomi Shehu as chair.
