As a young man growing up ,I wanted to be a writer or a journalist.
So when I took my JAMB Form , I actually filled in English and Literature .So one day I was watching NTA Network News and Chief Gani Fawehimwin SAN of blessed Memory said :
The Legal Profession ought to be and must strive to remain the dependable bastion of hope, help and succour for the repressed, the oppressed and the suppressed in our Society
I got inspired to be a lawyer and I used Correction fluid to change “English and Literature” to “Law”.That is how I studied Law at the prestigious University of Benin .
Alao Aka Bashorun as NBA President was so powerful that even the military Government with all their guns and decrees submitted to his superior legal fire works .
H O. ogbodu SAN as then Chairman of the NBA Benin Branch was called on Landline by the then Military Administrator of Edo State Lt Col. Mohammed Onuka , to come to Government House , Benin for a Meeting.He told him he was not coming as he does not associate with Tyrants.
Where is our NBA ?How many Bar Leaders in Nigeria can inspire young boys and girls to read law today ?
In one of the issues raised by the President of the NBA-Y.C .Mickyau SAN,FCIarb UK , 8 Judges -Designate in Edo State went through all the processes to be appointed as Judges .Did all their screenings, from JSC, to NBA , to DSS, to NJC.NJC then recommended in June ,2023 that they should be appointed .All their mates have all been sworn in The Governor of Edo State refused to swear them in .He said there were Petitions.Is the Governor of Edo State now an Appeals Committee of the NJC.How can the President of the NBA berate the NBA SPIDEL Chairman for coming to Edo State to ask that the right thing be done?NBA has structure and every unit acts according to its Mandate .SPIDEL is for Public Interest The President should show us support , because the motto of NBA is Promoting the Rule of Law
Aikpokpo Martins Esq , the Chairman of NBA SPIDEL is the last man standing. He has fought many Public Interest Matters and that is what SPIDEL is all about .
NBA National Leaders should know that there is no longer a monopoly in the legal profession.They must be very careful.
The NBA SPIDEL Chairman was duly elected in an election in Lagos in 2023 .With all due respect to my President of the NBA -Y.C. Mickyau SAN , he can not suspend the activities of SPIDEL The NBA President is not a Military Junta ,he is the President of a body of Lawyers and to show example to other leaders , he must follow the Constitution.I see his purported suspension of the activities as a comment that emanates from anger .Mr President should wake up this morning and calm the tension .
NBA SPIDEL is doing a great job .We should be commended and not berated.
You can never fall into trouble for doing the right thing
