NBA Secures Freedom: Port Harcourt Lawyer Released After Months in Detention
Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has confirmed the release of Port Harcourt-based lawyer Kelvin Okorie, who had been in detention since September 2024. Okorie, initially held by the Nigerian Navy, was transferred to the Nigerian Police Force on Friday, January 11, 2025, following direct intervention by the NBA.
In a statement, the NBA President revealed that Okorie was welcomed by members of the association in Abuja on Monday after his release. Mazi Osigwe shared details of the efforts that led to Okorie’s freedom, explaining that the NBA had engaged in high-level advocacy to secure the release.
“On January 7, 2025, under my leadership, we directly engaged with the Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G. Musa, to push for Mr. Okorie’s release,” Osigwe explained. “This intervention facilitated his transfer from naval custody to the Nigerian Police, culminating in his release on January 11.”
During his meeting with NBA members, Okorie expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the association’s tireless efforts on his behalf. He also reaffirmed his commitment to actively participating in Bar activities, emphasizing the strength and solidarity of the profession. “His resolve highlights the need for unity and vigilance within our legal community,” Osigwe added.
