New Lagos Speaker Mojisola Meranda Seeks Blessings After Obasa’s Impeachment
The newly elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, on Tuesday, met with members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) at the Lagos House in Marina.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Meranda explained that the purpose of the gathering was to brief the GAC members about the recent impeachment of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, and to seek their blessings for the transition.
“We are here to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessing, which we have gotten,” Meranda stated.
The lawmakers emphasized that the impeachment of Obasa was necessary to protect the integrity and sanctity of the Lagos State House of Assembly. On Monday, the House voted to remove Obasa from office and replace him with Meranda as Speaker.
Addressing the press, the lawmakers explained, “It’s just a change of baton, only death is constant, so change is inevitable. The members of parliament today decided to change the leadership of the House, and the constitution made it clear that the House has the power to regulate its proceedings.”
Meranda’s meeting with the GAC signifies a new chapter for the Lagos State Assembly, with the new leadership now moving forward with the full support of the state’s political advisors.
