In a significant move to improve cleanliness in the state, the Kano State House of Assembly has passed a law imposing a fine of 25,000 Naira on individuals caught spitting, urinating, defecating, or dumping waste on public streets or under bridges in the city.
The new law empowers the relevant authorities responsible for beautifying Kano and managing recreational spaces. Speaking after the Assembly’s plenary on Monday, Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala explained that the government was taking these steps to elevate Kano’s cleanliness to the level of other developed global cities.
In addition to the 25,000 Naira fine, the law outlines additional penalties for those found guilty of such offenses, aiming to deter such behavior and maintain the city’s aesthetics.
The Assembly also reviewed a bill for the amendment of the Kano Waste Management and Environmental Sanitation Authority Act, which proposes the creation of an Assistant Executive Governor to further streamline waste management in the state.
