Niger State Farmers Express Concern Over Declining Food Prices Due to Overseas Sourcing
Farmers in Niger State are raising alarms over the continued drop in food prices, attributing the trend to Nigerian food processing companies increasingly importing agricultural products from international markets.
While the lower prices have benefited Nigerian consumers, the farmers warn that the situation threatens their livelihoods and the broader local economy, which relies heavily on the domestic agricultural sector.
Hassan Ango Abdullahi, President of the Amana Farmers and Grains Suppliers Association of Nigeria, Shiroro branch, highlighted the sharp decline in prices that has affected local producers. He explained that food processing companies have begun sourcing cheaper products from neighboring countries such as Chad and Ghana, undermining the income of domestic farmers.
“Initially, we sold a 100-kilogram bag of beans for N103,000 and soybeans for N105,000, but now the prices have dropped to N80,000,” Abdullahi shared, underscoring the challenging economic environment for local farmers.
