Nigeria Calls for Dialogue and Cooperation to Strengthen West African Stability Following Niger’s Claims

The Federal Republic of Nigeria, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has reaffirmed its commitment to peace, stability, and regional cooperation within West Africa, following recent allegations made by the President of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, Abdourahman Tchiani.

Tchiani had recently accused the Nigerian government of collaborating with France to destabilize Niger. In a viral video, he claimed that France was financially supporting Nigeria’s efforts to establish a military base in Borno State, which he alleged could destabilize the Nigerien state.

In response to these allegations, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, issued a statement on Tuesday, asserting that Nigeria remains dedicated to peaceful dialogue as the foundation of sustainable solutions in the region. He emphasized that Nigeria had no intentions of engaging in any activities that could undermine Niger’s sovereignty or security.

The Minister highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Niger, noting the strong economic and trade interdependence between the two countries. He stressed that these enduring relationships were a reminder of the interconnected destinies of both nations.

Tuggar condemned the spread of unfounded allegations, stating that such claims only raise unnecessary tensions that could disrupt regional harmony and hinder collective progress. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s respect for Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, aligning with the principles of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Further, the Minister called for open, constructive dialogue between the two governments and invited Niger’s leadership to engage in candid discussions to address mutual concerns. He expressed Nigeria’s readiness to explore confidence-building measures, including collective support for alleviating the humanitarian impact on border communities.

In his statement, Tuggar also urged regional and international partners to support reconciliation and stability efforts, rather than exacerbating divisions. He emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to the principles of diplomacy, mutual respect, and peace, expressing confidence that constructive engagement would lead to a more prosperous and stable future for both nations and the West African region as a whole.
