Nigerian Law School Mourns Tragic Death of Bar Part II Student, Victor Olumba

The Council of Legal Education has expressed profound sorrow over the sudden death of Mr. Victor Chibueze Olumba, a Bar Part II student of the Dr. Nabo Graham-Douglas Campus of the Nigerian Law School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In a joint statement released on June 4, 2025, and signed by Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, OFR, Chairman of the Council, and Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, the Council described the incident as a tragic and unfortunate loss. It also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

“The Council of Legal Education is deeply saddened by the unfortunate death of Mr. Victor Chibueze Olumba… Our thoughts and prayers are with the parents and other family members of the deceased student at this difficult time,” the statement read.

The statement confirmed that the school management had been in contact with Olumba’s family and had already offered personal condolences before the official announcement.

According to the Council, the Nigerian Police Force, Rivers State Command, has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Olumba’s death. As such, the Council has chosen not to comment on the specific details until the investigation concludes.

“In the meantime, we urge the public to disregard unsubstantiated, reckless, and sensational speculations being circulated by some social media bloggers. Let us honour the memory of the deceased and respect the privacy of his family during this difficult period,” the Council emphasized.

The Council further reassured students, parents, and the general public that the welfare and security of students across all seven campuses of the Nigerian Law School remain a top priority.

A comprehensive report on the incident will be made available once the police investigation is complete.

The statement closed with a solemn tribute:

“May the soul of Mr. Victor Chibueze Olumba rest in peace.”

While many mourn the young student’s passing, others have called for transparency and accountability. Several voices are urging authorities not to let the investigation fall into the cycle of unresolved tragedies, a pattern too familiar in the Nigerian justice system.
