Nigerian Polytechnic Students Call For Reversal Of N50 Levy On Transfers From N10,000, Tag It ‘Daylight Robbery’
The National Association of Polytechnic Students has called for a stop to the electronic transfer levy introduced by the Federal Inland Revenue Service.
This was communicated in a statement signed by Comrade Oyewumi Festus, Zonal Public Relations Officer, southwest zone of the association.
“Some of the policies of Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) are becoming unbearable; lack of humanity at heart is becoming order of the day by the Chairman of FIRS,” the statement read in part.
“This new policy of 50 naira levy on every transaction is daylight robbery of the masses little resources despite the hardship being faced by the citizens of this country, Nigerian Government is borrowing every day.”
“FIRS is generating tax every second, where are all these monies as if those money are not enough, another wicked policy is being announced by FIRS to remove 50 naira on each electronic transfer. This is extortion of poor masses, this is wickedness, must the FIRS Chairman go all out with every means to exhort the masses just for him to proof that he is working,” the statement added.
The association called on the President Bola Tinubu to remove Dr Zacch Adedeji as the Chairman of FIRS.
It said, “It seems he is out of ideas, President should be aware of those he appointed who have evil agenda against his government and the citizens of Nigeria.
“The leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) through the Office of Zonal PRO of Southwest Zone is seriously calling the attention of the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria to this issue and also the issue of VAT increment to 10 percent.
“Nigerians are suffering, the hardship is telling on the common man, President is not buying rice, neither the Chairman of FIRS, it is us the masses that are facing it. If anyone in this Government says we are facing it together, that person must be a perpetual liar and a wicked soul,” it said.
The group further called on the President Bola Tinubu to rescue the masses currently facing hardship.
A financial institution sent messages to its customers announcing a N50 charge on every transfer of N10,000 and above.
The policy is expected to take effect from September 9, 2024.
