Nigerian Students’ Body NANS Demands Immediate Release Of ‘National Asset’ Nnamdi Kanu, Calls For Political Solution
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kanu has remained in detention since June 2021, following his abduction in Kenya and subsequent rendition to Nigeria, an action that triggered widespread protests and calls for his freedom.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, jointly signed by NANS President Comrade Isah Atiku Abubakar and Public Relations Officer Comrade Orowole Eniola, the association expressed regret that, despite multiple court rulings granting Kanu bail, the federal government has consistently failed to implement them.
“We understand that the President believes in the rule of law and the unity of the country,” NANS said. “No section of the country should feel marginalised or be treated like second-class citizens,” as Kanu is already being treated.
The statement described Kanu as “a national asset to the country and should be allowed to contribute his quota”.
NANS noted that its call for Kanu’s release has been supported by various groups, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, as well as governors and National Assembly members from the Southeast region.
The student body further requested a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to formally present their demands and propose a political solution to the Kanu issue, emphasizing the importance of national unity.
The statement partly read: “The National Association of Nigerian Students at a meeting held in Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba unanimously agreed and requested the President of NANS, Comr. Atiku Isah to write the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces to request an audience and present the demand of the Nigerian students.
“NANS hereby appeals for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu by recommending a political solution to the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, because we understand that the President believes in the rule of law, and the unity of the country.”
