Nigerian Woman in the UK Appeals for Government Intervention After Husband’s Arrest and Children’s Removal
Oluwatosin, a Nigerian woman based in the United Kingdom, has urgently called on the Nigerian government and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) to intervene after a series of events led to her husband’s arrest and her children being removed from her custody in Durham. She describes the entire process as “unfair” and seeks support from the Nigerian authorities.
In an emotional interview with SaharaReporters, Oluwatosin recounted the harrowing situation that began on December 3, 2024, when her daughter made a statement at school about her husband. This led to his arrest that same day. However, just days later, on December 8, her daughter retracted her statement.
Despite the retraction, social services took action, and by December 12, Oluwatosin was summoned to court with little notice, and her children were removed from her custody. She has since been granted only supervised visits, which have been further complicated by allegations against her.
“I was accused by the student social worker of whispering to my daughter and intimidating her,” Oluwatosin explained. As a result, she was arrested on January 6, 2025, and is now under conditions that prevent her from seeing her children.
Oluwatosin also revealed that her electronic devices, including her phones and laptop, have been seized by the police, leaving her isolated from communication with both her husband and children.

The distraught mother has reached out to the Nigerian High Commission and NIDCOM, expressing that she has no contacts within these institutions to aid her during this difficult time. “Please, I need the Nigerian authorities and NIDCOM to come to my rescue,” she pleaded.
She also expressed frustration with the school, where she had previously raised concerns about her daughter’s behavior. Despite her ongoing efforts to address her child’s issues, the situation escalated, and the school, she says, failed to provide the support she expected.
“I have been documenting my concerns with this school about her behavior, exposure, and ways of life. Even the school itself once questioned if it was the right environment for her,” Oluwatosin noted.

Oluwatosin’s case has drawn attention within the Nigerian community in the UK, where many are expressing sympathy and concern for the family’s situation. The woman highlighted that her case is not isolated, as many Nigerians abroad face similar challenges with social services and the legal system.
“I know a lot of Nigerians are in this situation. No one is stopping them from investigating, but the way this is being handled is unfair,” she said, calling attention to the broader issue of how Nigerians in diaspora are treated in such matters.

Her appeal brings into focus the need for better support for Nigerian citizens facing crises overseas, particularly when the rights and well-being of their families are at stake.
