“NNPP Clears Air: Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Kwankwaso Remain Members”
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has officially responded to rumors surrounding the status of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and former presidential candidate Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, stating that both remain active members of the party. The clarification was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, in an interview with News Central on Monday.
Johnson emphasized that the faction led by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), holds the legitimate authority to speak on behalf of the party. He categorically dismissed reports claiming that either Yusuf or Kwankwaso had been expelled or suspended.
“This party has not expelled or suspended Abba Kabir Yusuf or Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,” Johnson affirmed. “A party recognized by the Constitution and Electoral Act must be the one registered by INEC, and those making contrary claims are not a party, but a group, regardless of what they call themselves.”
The statement comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the NNPP, with conflicting reports emerging from rival factions. Johnson further clarified that the INEC-recognized leadership, led by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed and himself, remains the legitimate authority within the party.
“INEC recognizes the NNPP led by Dr. Ajuji Ahmed as chairman and me, Ladipo Johnson, as publicity secretary. That is what is recognized by law today,” he reiterated.
Reflecting on the origins of the internal strife, Johnson revealed that the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, had attempted to override decisions made by the National Working Committee (NWC), which ultimately led to his suspension. He also disclosed that even Kwankwaso was unaware of the suspension at the time, shedding light on the discord that has deepened within the party.
