“No NBC Licence For Radio Biafra” — SSS Witness Tells Court 170–200 Security Agents Killed In South-East As Kanu’s Trial Continues
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja heard shocking details on Wednesday about the activities of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), which have resulted in the deaths of between 170 and 200 security agents in the South-East region.
The fourth prosecution witness, a Department of State Services (DSS) official, testified that IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu allegedly directed attacks on security personnel and was involved in smuggling a radio transmitter into Nigeria to operate Radio Biafra without a license from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
The witness detailed gruesome claims by ESN members, including rituals involving human heads used for protection, and a plot to bury a deceased member, Ikonso, with 2,000 human heads—though only 30 were reportedly found.
Evidence was also presented regarding the killing of former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Barrister Ahmed Gulak, in Owerri on May 30, 2021. The witness explained that Gulak was stopped at an IPOB checkpoint and killed after being identified by a Muslim prayer mark on his forehead.
The DSS official recounted the violent takeover of Owerri Prison, allegedly ordered by Kanu, and described raids where ESN members were found with human heads and reportedly consuming human flesh for spiritual fortification.
On the matter of the radio transmitter, the witness stated that after confiscating it from Anambra State, DSS officials had the NBC inspect it, confirming it was a German-made FM transmitter which Kanu never applied for a license to operate.
During cross-examination, the witness acknowledged no official record existed for the transmitter’s importation but maintained Kanu’s ownership and illegal possession of the device.
The court adjourned until Thursday for the prosecution to call its fifth witness.
