“NUC Upgrades Key Health Programs to Doctor Status for Better Clinical Training”

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced a significant upgrade to several health-related academic programs in Nigerian universities. In a statement released on Wednesday, Franca Chukwuonwo, Acting Director of Public Affairs for the NUC, revealed that the decision was aimed at improving clinical and practical training, expanding foundational course coverage, and enhancing clinical skills in these fields.

The upgrade, which aligns with global best practices, will see the duration of affected programs extended from five to six years. This extension is designed to accommodate additional coursework and more comprehensive clinical training.

As part of the changes, the NUC has elevated the Bachelor’s Degree programs in Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, and Optometry to Doctoral status. These programs, now titled Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D), Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT), and Doctor of Optometry (O.D.), will include clinical sessions to ensure students receive the necessary hands-on experience.

The adjustments reflect NUC’s commitment to ensuring Nigerian universities provide top-tier education in health sciences, preparing students to meet international standards in their respective fields.
