The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has expressed deep concerns over the persistent rise in the cost of living across the country, urging the federal government to take swift action to reverse the trend. This call was made in a communiqué following the union’s first Congress of the year, which took place at its secretariat in Abuja.
During the congress, which was presided over by Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, the union emphasized the need for immediate government intervention to improve the economic conditions of citizens and foster social development. Over 400 members and past leaders of the union attended the meeting, which also addressed other urgent issues affecting the nation.
Comrade Ike highlighted the heavy burden placed on Nigerians by the escalating cost of basic goods and services, calling on the government to implement measures to ease the hardship. The union also raised concerns about the poor supply of electricity and the growing insecurity in parts of the FCT, noting the adverse effects these issues have on both businesses and the general public.
“The frequent disruption in electricity and water supply are pushing operational costs higher and reducing profit margins for businesses, placing an additional strain on the average Nigerian,” the communiqué stated. Ike stressed that the erratic power supply, in particular, has a devastating impact on businesses, especially in the FCT, urging relevant authorities to prioritize the restoration of basic amenities.
The union’s leadership reiterated its commitment to advocating for the well-being of the public and improving the quality of life, emphasizing the need for government action to address both economic and security challenges.
