NYSC tasks accountants on data protection, documentation
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has advised account officers in the scheme to ensure proper documentation of all financial transactions.
The Director-General, Brig-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, said they were also expected to guard their log in details and uphold the virtues of dedication, diligence and higher responsibility.
The Director, Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, noted that the DG stated this in Abuja, yesterday, at the 2023 Finance and Accounts Officers’ Workshop with the theme, ‘Achieving Accountability and Transparency in Public Sector Accounting Through Proper Documentation’.
He added that, in line with his administration’s policy thrust, the scheme would continue to provide a conducive environment for the officers in the discharge of their official responsibilities.
Represented by the Director, Ventures Management Department, Mohammed Momoh, the DG urged participants to rededicate themselves to achieve excellence in the discharge of their duties.
In his address, the Acting Director, Finance and Accounts, Batan Akut, said proper accountability could not be over-emphasised because “it is pivotal to foster trust and credibility in public sector accounting.”
Documentation not only upholds ethical standards, but also promotes responsible governance, he added.
“Through meticulous record-keeping, the public gains insight into how funds are allocated and utilised, fostering confidence in the administration’s stewardship.
“Transparency in documenting financial activities bolsters accountability, prevents mismanagement, corruption and ultimately ensures that public resources are judiciously utilised for the collective welfare and development of the society,” Akut said.
He, therefore, tasked the workshop participants to utilise the opportunity of the lectures from the invited resource persons to broaden their knowledge.
In his lecture on ‘Financial Regulation as a Guiding Framework for Documentation of Financial Transactions in Public Sector’, Salawu Zubairu, from the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, urged the finance and account officers to always comply with the extant laws and government regulations.
According to him, internal audit observation is necessary, as improper documentation in financial transactions can lead to unpleasant consequences.
