Oba Sejiro James Installs Alhaji Mohammed Umar as New Seriki Fulani of Badagry
The Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, Oba Sejiro James, has officially installed Alhaji Mohammed Umar as the Seriki Fulani of Badagry, Lagos State, a prestigious title that underscores the significance of the Fulani community in the region. The ceremony, which took place at the Sito Gbethrome Community along the Semé Expressway, saw the presence of Fulani socio-cultural leaders from across the South-West and neighboring Benin Republic.
During the installation, Oba Sejiro James presented the traditional staff of office and beads to Alhaji Umar, offering words of encouragement for his leadership. “Though the stool you are on is too high, you have been endorsed by God today, and He will be guarding you,” Oba James declared, highlighting the gravity of the position.
Oba James called on the new Seriki Fulani to be proactive in addressing issues within the Badagry communities, particularly the ongoing tensions between pastoralists and farmers. He advised Umar to appoint representatives across various Badagry communities to stay informed and ensure peaceful coexistence.
At the event, Alhaji Saidu Yusuf, Chairman of the APC Arewa Communities in Lagos, emphasized the importance of unity, urging both Fulani and Yoruba communities to prioritize development over political divisions. “We should put politics apart and work for the development of our communities,” Yusuf said.
Alhaji Mohammed Laba, the Seriki Fulani of Abeokuta and Chairman of Meyiti Allah, South-West, also praised the role of traditional leaders in conflict resolution. “One of our own is being installed, we are happy to be in Badagry. This is grassroots, and it will spread everywhere,” Laba remarked. He encouraged the new Seriki to discourage criminal activities within the pastoralist community and maintain peaceful relationships with their host communities.
Alhaji Aminu Dogara, Chairman of the Arewa Council of Chiefs in Lagos, reiterated the commitment of Arewa leaders to the welfare of all residents in the state. Oba Olusegun Wheto, the Aholu of Dale Whedako, also prayed for wisdom for Umar as he steps into his new role.
In his acceptance speech, Alhaji Mohammed Umar vowed to address pressing issues such as poverty, education, and healthcare while ensuring the preservation of the Fulani cultural heritage. “We must preserve our traditions while embracing innovation and progress,” Umar stated. He also called on his people to adhere to community regulations regarding cattle rearing and contribute to the development of Badagry.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Oba Adekanmi Oyekanmi, the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, traditional chiefs, and representatives from the Nigerian Police and Army. The installation marked a significant moment for the Fulani community in Badagry, signaling a continued commitment to peace, development, and cultural preservation.
