Obasa Denies Arms Cache Allegation, Calls it ‘Lazy Journalism’ and Smear Campaign
Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has rejected a viral report alleging that the Department of State Services (DSS) uncovered an arms cache in his former office. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Obasa called the report, which appeared on February 18, a “lazy journalistic story” and an intentional smear campaign against his long-standing political career.
Obasa fiercely denied the claims, describing the report as “a complete concoction” designed to tarnish his hard-earned reputation. He accused the authors and sponsors of the story of fabricating falsehoods and riddling the report with inconsistencies and unverified assertions. Obasa criticized the vague and unsubstantiated claims, which included phantom sources and alleged details of a supposed arms discovery in his office.
The report claimed that the DSS discovered 47 pump-action rifles and live cartridges hidden in Obasa’s office following a security sweep, leading to the alleged involvement of the DSS. However, Obasa countered that the report lacked credible sources and failed to provide concrete evidence to support the allegations.
Obasa speculated that the story was part of an orchestrated smear campaign following his removal as Speaker, which he is currently challenging in court. He also mentioned that after his removal, his office and the Assembly chambers were forcibly searched, but nothing incriminating was found. He pointed out that the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, had even performed a spiritual cleansing of the office.
The former Speaker also took issue with additional fabricated claims about him, such as the construction of a N16 billion gate and the purchase of a N40 billion Toyota Hilux. Obasa suggested that his detractors were actively trying to blackmail him through fabricated allegations and vowed to pursue legal action to ensure justice prevails.
Obasa concluded by warning the public that further attempts to tarnish his image would likely lead to even more extreme accusations, such as harassment or theft, calling these new allegations “lies from the pit of hell.”
