Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on the Nigerian police to act swiftly and effectively when ordinary citizens face security challenges, following their successful operation to rescue Folashade Odumosu, the wife of retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Hakeem Odumosu.
Obi’s remarks, made on Friday, come after the police’s successful rescue of Mrs. Odumosu, who was abducted on January 16, 2025, by four masked gunmen in Arepo, Ogun State. The kidnappers took her from her Lexus Jeep outside her residence, and after a week of tense negotiations, the police secured her release. They also recovered a N10 million ransom, seized ammunition, and neutralized some of the kidnappers.
Obi took to social media to commend the Nigeria Police Force for their rapid response and professionalism. He wrote on X, “I commend the Nigeria Police for their swift and effective response in rescuing Mrs. Folashade Odumosu, the wife of retired AIG Hakeem Odumosu, who was kidnapped just a few days ago.”
He further praised the precision of the police operation, noting, “The operation, conducted within a week, highlights their capacity to act decisively when motivated.” Obi pointed out the impressive results: the safe release of Mrs. Odumosu, the neutralization of some kidnappers, the recovery of weapons, and the retrieval of the ransom.
The former governor emphasized that this successful operation shows Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies are capable of effectively fighting crime when they have proper leadership, motivation, and the necessary support.
While applauding the police’s efforts, Obi also urged the police to extend the same urgency and professionalism to cases involving everyday Nigerians. “Many innocent citizens remain victims of abduction, languishing in captivity without rescue efforts reaching them,” he noted.
Obi concluded, “This successful operation is a testament to the possibilities that lie within our security architecture when it is properly managed and prioritised. It demonstrates that, even in the face of challenges, a new Nigeria is truly POssible.”
