“Obidient Movement Accuses Tinubu of Plotting to Derail Obi’s 2027 Bid”
Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, has accused the Nigerian Presidency of deliberately fueling the crisis within the Labour Party (LP) in a bid to prevent Mr. Peter Obi from contesting the 2027 general elections on a credible platform.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with New Telegraph’s Olaolu Oladipo, Dr. Tanko alleged that the deepening division within the Labour Party is not organic but rather “state-sponsored,” claiming it is part of a wider political strategy orchestrated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“President Tinubu himself said during his June 12 address that he’s pleased the opposition is in disarray,” Tanko stated. “That alone is enough proof that the ruling APC is stoking internal conflicts among rivals to weaken any serious challenge in 2027.”
Tanko reaffirmed that the Obidient Movement remains fully loyal to Mr. Obi and is actively engaged in coalition-building efforts with other opposition groups to mount a united front against the APC. According to him, Peter Obi remains firmly committed to running for president and is not considering playing second fiddle to any other candidate, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
“All those talks about Obi becoming Atiku’s running mate are baseless distractions,” Tanko said. “He is not desperate for power; he is desperate to fix Nigeria.”
Although the Labour Party is still the political base of the movement, Tanko hinted that the Obidient Movement may reassess its position if the internal strife within the party continues unchecked. “We are still in the Labour Party for now,” he noted. “But if the situation requires a change, we will consult our supporters and make the right decision.”
Tanko also issued a challenge to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging it to intervene decisively to resolve the LP leadership crisis. “INEC has all the documents and facts. What they lack is the political will. If they do the right thing now, history will judge them kindly,” he asserted.
He did not spare the Tinubu administration in his remarks, sharply criticizing the government for failing to deliver on its campaign promises. “They pledged three million jobs annually, but what we have now is mass hunger, insecurity in states like Benue and Taraba, and inflation making life unbearable,” Tanko said.
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Tanko called on Nigerians to stay vigilant, resist the manipulation of democratic processes, and rally behind transformative leaders like Peter Obi. “We’re not just fighting for one man; we’re fighting to reclaim Nigeria’s future,” he declared.
