Ogun Kidnapping: Family Claims Police Demanded Fee to Track Missing 7-Year-Old
A 7-year-old girl, Mercy Akande, the daughter of a female Point-of-Sale (POS) operator in Ogun State, has reportedly been kidnapped by a man who was a regular customer of her mother’s business.
The incident took place on Monday, December 23, 2024, and has sparked widespread concern across Nigeria, with calls on social media for increased accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
The abduction was first brought to light in a tweet on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, by a user named Miyakee, tweeting under the handle #mimara_concept. Miyakee revealed that the alleged kidnapper, a man who frequently visited the POS shop, had a friendly relationship with the young girl. He would often buy food items and give her money whenever he visited.
However, things took a dark turn when, on the morning of December 23, the man asked Mercy to run an errand and fetch him a sachet of water. As she was returning from the store, he reportedly met her halfway.
The girl’s mother, initially unaware of any danger, became briefly annoyed upon seeing the man with her daughter but didn’t have time to investigate further due to her work with customers at the shop. Moments later, both the man and Mercy were gone, leaving the mother frantic.
