“Ogun State Takes Action on Environmental Sanitation Around New Border Road Projects”
The Ogun State Government has called on residents of its border towns—including Ojodu-Abiodun, Denro, Ishasi, Alagbole-Akute, Lambe, and Ijoko—to maintain proper environmental sanitation and hygiene to fully benefit from the new road infrastructure provided by the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Dr. Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, made the appeal during an environmental tour of the newly constructed roads, which was led by him and included a team from the Ministry of Environment, Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), and officials from Ifo and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Areas.
Oresanya urged residents and the Community Development Association (CDA) in these towns to ensure that waste is not dumped in the road drainage channels and to stop illegally diverting wastewater from their homes onto the roads. He also highlighted the role of CDAs in monitoring and preventing roadside residents from using the drainage spaces for home-based trading, such as placing planks and containers. He stressed that such actions could block the free flow of water during the rainy season and damage the drainage system, ultimately shortening its lifespan.
The commissioner advised residents to use covered waste bins at home and to hire certified waste collectors for proper disposal, warning them against using waste cart pushers who might contribute to improper waste management. He also promised that the setbacks along the new roads would be cleaned up and beautified to enhance the towns’ overall aesthetic appeal.
Additionally, Oresanya cautioned retailers and wholesale outlets against causing noise pollution, noting that it could negatively affect the health and well-being of local residents.
Both Idris Olalekan Kusimo, Chairman of Ifo Local Government, and Wasiu Lawal, Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, who were part of the environmental team, assured the public that they would continue enforcing environmental laws in their respective councils to promote a clean and healthy environment.
Earlier, Akangbe Olatunde, the Chairman of the Ifo Community Development Committee, expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Government for the road development, acknowledging its impact on the border communities. He pledged to launch a broad environmental awareness campaign aimed at safeguarding the new infrastructure from environmental hazards.
