Ohanaeze Ndigbo Blasts Governor Fubara Over Alleged Undermining of Rivers House of Assembly

The Chief Jackson Omenazu-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo has strongly criticized Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of undermining the rule of law and creating unnecessary political strife in the state. The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, which has been vocal about its stance on the political situation in Rivers, expressed deep concern over the governor’s alleged disregard for constitutional due process.

In a statement issued on Friday, signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, and Chief Chinenyeze Thompson Ohia, National Publicity Secretary, the group condemned the actions of Governor Fubara and expressed full support for the leadership of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly under Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Condemns Fubara’s Actions, Backs Amaewhule-Led Rivers Assembly

According to the group, the actions of Governor Fubara, which include working with a three-member House of Assembly, are a clear violation of due process. Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized that in the eyes of the law and the conscience of the people, Rt. Hon. Amaewhule is the legitimate and rightful Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The Igbo group also expressed their disappointment with the governor for allegedly sowing division and urged him to stop fueling political tension within the state.

The group lauded the Amaewhule-led House for overriding the governor’s veto on three critical bills aimed at addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by marginalized populations in Rivers State. These bills, including the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Amendment Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commission of Inquiry Bill, were presented to the governor over a month ago but had yet to be approved.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo further criticized Governor Fubara for withholding approval of these important bills, which they said were designed to improve the living conditions of Rivers State’s impoverished residents. The group commended the legislature for overriding the governor’s veto, in accordance with the Constitution, affirming their dedication to their constitutional duties.

Additionally, Ohanaeze expressed concern over the governor’s actions regarding the 2025 Appropriation Bill, which was presented to three individuals — Victor Oko-Jumbo, Adolphus Timothy, and Sokari Goodboy. The group raised questions about the legitimacy of this move and its potential to undermine the true interests of Rivers citizens.
