“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Condemns Amaechi’s Remarks, Calls for Peace and Democracy”
The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has strongly condemned former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, for his recent remarks that were seen as a threat to democracy and national stability. Amaechi’s comments, which included a call for “brutal force” to seize power from President Bola Tinubu in 2027, were sharply criticized by Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who deemed them both alarming and dangerous.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Kaduna, Deputy President General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro expressed outrage at Amaechi’s rhetoric, emphasizing that the Igbo people would never back any effort to undermine the legitimacy of an elected president. “Amaechi’s outrageous call for Nigerians to resort to ‘brutal force’ to wrest power from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by 2027 contradicts the core values of civility, democracy, and peace that we stand for,” Isiguzoro stated.
He further condemned Amaechi’s disturbing assertion that politicians must resort to violence, including “stealing, maiming, and killing,” in order to hold on to power. Such remarks, he said, posed a serious threat to the nation’s stability and peace.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to democratic principles, declaring that the Ndigbo would never endorse any political conspiracy aimed at destabilizing the government. The group strongly rejected Amaechi’s divisive comments and declared its firm support for President Tinubu.
The group also echoed the sentiments of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, who had called on Amaechi to stop inciting violence. Isiguzoro echoed the call, urging Amaechi to retract his statements and cease further attempts to incite the public, warning that failure to do so would lead to serious consequences.
Concluding the statement, Ohanaeze Ndigbo reaffirmed its loyalty to President Tinubu, emphasizing its ongoing advocacy for peace, stability, and good governance in Nigeria.
