Okiro Declares Readiness for Ohanaeze Presidency, Highlights Leadership Qualities

As the election for the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo draws near, former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, has reiterated his qualifications for the position, emphasizing his extensive leadership experience and dedication to the well-being of the Igbo community. Okiro, a major contender for the role, highlighted his inclusive leadership style and outlined a robust agenda to address the region’s unique challenges.

Okiro, who also served as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, explained that while there are five candidates vying for the role, his leadership background and experience in managing complex security and cultural issues set him apart. He expressed a deep commitment to improving the culture, economy, and security of Ndigbo, particularly in light of the region’s ongoing struggles with insecurity.

Reflecting on his past accomplishments, Okiro pointed to his role as IGP, where he was instrumental in the creation of the Amnesty Programme that helped restore peace in the Niger Delta. He emphasized his plan to collaborate with stakeholders to bring stability to the South-East, using his experience and networks to address both security and socio-cultural challenges faced by the Igbo people worldwide.

Addressing questions regarding his state of origin, Okiro clarified that he hails from Rivers State, not Imo, despite being associated with Ohaji-Egbema. He provided personal details, including his university history and interactions with key figures, to establish his roots in Rivers State.

Okiro also mentioned that his candidacy is strongly backed by the Rivers Chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, with notable figures such as Chief Lucky Ekeji and Mrs. Love Chimezie Meregini supporting his eligibility.

In parallel, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has assured that the upcoming Ohanaeze election on January 10 will proceed peacefully. MASSOB’s leader, Uchenna Madu, emphasized their commitment to ensuring a smooth process and affirmed that all qualified candidates from the Igbo-speaking region, including Okiro, are eligible to run for the position of President-General. He warned against any interference by external forces and urged the election to remain free of disruptions.

With both Okiro and MASSOB’s commitment to a peaceful process, the stage is set for a significant election in the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
