The elections, scheduled for January 18, will involve contests in the 18 local governments and 203 political wards across the state.
During the inauguration ceremony at the conference hall of the State High Court, Justice Odusola emphasized the judiciary’s vital role in ensuring free and fair elections. The newly inaugurated tribunals are composed of Senior Magistrates and distinguished legal professionals, including Dr. Dickson Omotuyole Oguntuyi, Mrs. Ruth Olumilua Adebodun, Mr. Kehinde Aladedutire, Mrs. Aduroja Folasade Atinuke, Mr. Lebi Taiwo Olalekan, and Mr. Victor Adetiloye Ajayi.
Upholding Democracy: A Call for Impartiality and Integrity
In his address, Justice Odusola reminded the tribunal members of the importance of their role in safeguarding democracy and the electoral process. “This occasion underscores the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding democracy, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring justice is dispensed impartially,” he said.
He further pointed out that elections are the foundation of democracy, allowing citizens to choose their leaders. However, when disputes arise, it is the responsibility of the judiciary to serve as the ultimate arbiter, restoring public confidence and ensuring that justice is served.
Justice Odusola also stressed that the tribunal’s work was both critical and delicate, urging members to perform their duties with utmost integrity. “You are not just arbiters of justice but guardians of democracy. The integrity and impartiality with which you handle this responsibility will determine public trust in the judiciary and the stability of our democratic framework,” he said.
Impartiality and Evidence-Based Decisions: A Message to the Tribunals
The Chief Judge called on the tribunal members to avoid any bias or external influence in their decisions, emphasizing that their judgments must be based solely on the law, evidence, and facts presented before them. “Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done. Your conduct reflects on the entire judiciary. Uphold the highest ethical standards and let the law take its course,” Justice Odusola urged.
Additionally, he appealed to the public to remain patient and respectful of the judicial process, urging citizens to refrain from actions or statements that could undermine the judiciary or disturb public peace.
Commitment to Justice: Tribunal Chair’s Pledge
The Chairman of the Election Petition Tribunal, Dr. Dickson Omotuyole Oguntuyi, assured the public that the tribunal would perform its duties without fear or favor. He acknowledged the enormity of their responsibilities and vowed to base their judgments on evidence and facts presented in each case, assuring that external pressures would not influence their decisions.
“We know the importance of our roles and will ensure that we discharge our duties accordingly,” Oguntuyi stated, pledging to uphold the principles of fairness and impartiality throughout the tribunal’s work.
