Opposition Leaders in Nigeria Explore Merger for 2027 Election
In response to the current challenges facing Nigeria, the three main opposition figures—Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Peter Obi (Labour Party), and Rabiu Kwankwaso (NNPP)—are considering forming a coalition to contest the 2027 presidential election. According to PDP deputy national spokesman Ibrahim Abdullahi, discussions are ongoing to unite these leaders in an effort to provide an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The potential merger aims to consolidate opposition forces, which were fragmented in the 2023 election, where Bola Tinubu of the APC emerged victorious. The opposition believes that by setting aside personal ambitions, they can present a united front strong enough to challenge the APC and address the pressing issues of insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria.
Abdullahi emphasized that the PDP is focused on rescuing Nigerians from the current situation, suggesting that one of the leaders may eventually step down to support a single candidate for the coalition. The primary goal is to prioritize the welfare of the nation over individual political aspirations.
