“Osun PDP Stands Firm on February 22 Elections Despite Court Ruling”

The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reassured residents that preparations for the February 22 local government elections are progressing as planned, despite the recent Court of Appeal ruling that overturned a previous decision by the Osogbo Federal High Court.

In a statement issued on Monday, Sunday Bisi, the PDP state chairman, addressed concerns raised by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed that the appellate court ruling had halted the elections. The PDP swiftly dismissed these claims, emphasizing that nothing had changed and that the election preparations were still on track.

Bisi stated, “Nothing has changed. We are fully prepared for the upcoming election. We have activated our legal team to challenge the judgment at the Supreme Court. We must stand against the APC’s shenanigans, just as we did in the 2022 elections.”

The party further urged Osun residents to stay calm and reject attempts by the APC to disrupt the democratic process. Bisi’s comments came as the political tension in the state continues to rise.

Meanwhile, the Action Peoples Party (APP) in Osun reaffirmed that the 2022 local government election remains nullified and is unaffected by Monday’s Court of Appeal ruling. APP state chairman, Odesola Oluseye Titus, clarified that the judgment delivered in a case filed by the APP against the APC and the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) on November 30, 2022, had not changed.

Titus also dismissed rumors that previously elected officials would be reinstated, saying, “There is no court order reinstating any Yes or No election candidates.” He encouraged Osun residents to actively participate in the upcoming February 22 elections, stressing the importance of the election for the state’s democracy.

At the same time, the Osun State House of Assembly has raised alarms about an alleged plot by the APC to incite violence following the Court of Appeal’s judgment. Speaker Adewale Egbedun, in a statement obtained by DAILY POST, urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure professionalism and neutrality in securing the state.

The Assembly also accused former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of using his current position as Minister of Marine and Blue Economy to influence security agencies in the state’s political matters. “We must not allow Osun to descend into chaos like Rivers State,” the statement warned.

In response, the Osun APC, through its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, criticized the Speaker for blaming Oyetola for the state’s political issues. Olabisi argued that the APC has always followed legal processes to seek justice and accused the PDP-led government of attempting to undermine the court ruling.

“Why does the PDP only accept court decisions when they are in their favour?” Olabisi questioned, intensifying the political standoff ahead of the upcoming elections.
