Osun Senator Demands Urgent Focus on Rice Production to Save the Naira

Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, has urged both federal and state governments to prioritize large-scale rice cultivation as a strategic initiative to strengthen the naira and reduce reliance on rice imports. The senator made the call during the distribution of 3,000 bags of rice to various groups across the 10 local government areas of his senatorial district in Ilase-Ijesa.

Fadahunsi highlighted the significant economic and social advantages of boosting local rice production, noting that it would not only reduce foreign exchange spent on rice imports but also shield the naira from further depreciation. He stated, “It is clear that rice has become a staple in Nigeria, and its demand cuts across all demographics. It’s critical for the government at all levels to ensure rice availability at affordable prices.”

Emphasizing the staggering foreign exchange spent annually on importing rice, he continued, “If we can produce rice locally in large quantities, we will reduce forex expenditure and, in turn, help strengthen the naira.” He called on both the federal and state governments to take immediate action in promoting large-scale rice farming.

Fadahunsi also praised the high turnout at the distribution event, where over 3,000 bags of rice were handed out to beneficiaries, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, political figures, and market women. The senator’s gesture was aimed at alleviating the economic challenges faced by his constituents. Market women, who visited the senator during the event, expressed their gratitude for his contributions to their welfare and asked for further support.

In his speech, Fadahunsi urged everyone to remain optimistic for a better 2025 and reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of his constituents. He called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to boost local food production and ensure the country’s economic stability.
