Over 700 Still Missing, 207 Dead As Niger Flood Disaster Worsens — Gov Bago Says 3,000 Households Displaced, 400 Homes Destroyed

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has confirmed the death of 207 people and declared more than 700 persons missing following a devastating flood that swept through Mokwa Community. Over 3,000 households have been displaced in what he described as a national disaster.

The Governor, represented by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, disclosed that the flood destroyed 283 homes, 50 shops, and damaged 400 other structures. Investigations are ongoing with experts assessing the cause of the catastrophic flooding.

The flood prompted a condolence visit from Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to Gen. Sani Abacha, who led a delegation of influential Nigerians to show support and discuss preventive strategies with traditional leaders in Mokwa.

“We are here to register our condolences and help ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Al-Mustapha said, pledging support for improved urban planning.

The delegation also visited former military president Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd) in Minna before engaging with community leaders. Relief efforts are ongoing as the state awaits full environmental and disaster assessments.
