Oyo NUJ Urges Security Agencies to Tackle Armed Robbery Surge in Ibadan
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has urged the state’s security agencies to take immediate and effective action to address the escalating security breaches in Ibadan, the state capital. The union’s call came after its monthly congress, where members expressed growing concern over rising robberies in parts of the city.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the congress, signed by the trio of Seye Ojo (Chairman), Sola Obidahunsi (Secretary), and Khalid Imran (Member), the NUJ highlighted the alarming increase in the number of armed robbery attacks between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., particularly in areas such as Mokola Roundabout, Sabo, Queen Elizabeth Road, Anfaani Junction, and Iyaganku. The robberies have been characterized by the use of weapons to forcefully take phones and other valuables from unsuspecting victims, with some criminals using commercial tricycles (Keke Maruwa) as well as motorcycles (Okadas) and taxis to carry out the attacks.
The union has appealed to the relevant security agencies to deploy the necessary resources and strategies to curb this wave of crime, ensuring public safety in these high-risk areas. It also called for greater vigilance from the public and suggested the formation of a task force to work with the security services to combat the growing menace. Additionally, the NUJ called on the Oyo State Government to address the poor lighting situation on Queen Elizabeth Road, particularly around UCH, where dark spots create vulnerabilities for attacks.
Another issue raised by the NUJ was the concerning influx of young people from the North, many of whom are being provided with motorcycles and vehicles, particularly in the Ojoo area. The union urged security agencies to investigate this development and take proactive steps to prevent any potential risks.
Additionally, the NUJ raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the morgue at the State Hospital in Adeoyo, Off Ring Road, Ibadan. According to the communiqué, the facility has been experiencing a lack of regular power supply, leading to a stench that poses serious health risks. The union warned that if the situation is not addressed promptly, it could lead to an outbreak of diseases in the surrounding area. The NUJ urged the Oyo State Hospital Management Board and the Ministry of Health to intervene and resolve the issue immediately.
The union’s communiqué concluded with an appeal for prompt action from all concerned authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in Ibadan.
