Oyo State Police Launch Manhunt for Ex-Banker and His Accomplices in Hotel Heist
A former banker turned businessman, Olufemi Olalekan Olushakin, alongside two accomplices, Ayomide Akanbi and David Adewale, have been charged in the Chief Magistrate Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for their alleged involvement in a daring armed robbery.
Olushakin, who is currently at large, was accused, along with his accomplices, of conspiring to commit robbery on the night of December 13, 2024. The robbery took place at Global Signature Hotel in Ibadan, where the suspects are alleged to have overpowered the security guards at the entrance, gaining illegal access to the premises.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Kefas Usman, the suspects proceeded to vandalize the hotel’s security system, destroying the CCTV memory and cutting off the surveillance equipment. They then targeted the hotel’s management, holding the hotel manager, Dare Akinola, at gunpoint. The robbers forced him to unlock the cash registry, taking the entire week’s earnings, including payments from rooms, the bar, and event halls, amounting to over N2.14 million.
The suspects did not stop there; they rounded up the hotel’s guests, threatening them at gunpoint, and demanded that they make cash transfers into Olushakin’s personal account. They also looted other valuable items, including the hotel’s computers, guest books, and various equipment.
Following the robbery, Chief Magistrate Mrs. Giwa Babalola remanded the suspects, Akanbi and Adewale, at the Agodi Correctional Center. However, Olushakin, who was absent during the court proceedings, remains on the run, with the Oyo State Police offering a reward of N5 million for information leading to his arrest.
