Panel Set To Screen 22 Supreme Court Nominees Ss CJN Promises Full Bench
The preparations are underway for the screening of the 22 justices nominated by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) to fill vacant positions on the Supreme Court Bench and the National Judicial Council (NJC).
According to the source, a panel tasked with interviewing the nominated justices is scheduled to commence sitting today (November 28) at the NJC headquarters in Abuja to interview the candidates. The exercise is expected to be concluded within a week.
Out of the 22 nominees, 11 will then be selected based on performance and suitability to occupy the available positions.
The screening comes on the heels of assurances by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola that the apex court will soon get its full constitutional complement of 21 justices for the first time ever.
Justice Ariwoola while speaking at the special opening of 2023/2024 legal year, said efforts are progressing to increase the number of Supreme Court judges which currently stands at 10. He noted that the development will bring relief to litigants.
The CJN also charged the judiciary to always deliver impartial judgements and resist external pressure in order to retain public confidence. He advocated for legal reforms including limiting appeals reaching the Supreme Court.
