The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, to deliberate on crucial issues affecting the party’s direction and make resolutions aimed at strengthening its structure.
A communique released after the meeting reaffirmed the BoT’s role as a key organ of the party, as outlined under Section 13 (1)(r) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017). The Board also highlighted its authority to ensure the party upholds high moral standards and to call erring officers to account, as granted by Section 32 (5)(a) of the constitution.
After reviewing the report from a committee led by Barr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), the BoT adopted the recommendation to recognize Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the substantive National Secretary. This decision followed a declaratory judgment from the High Court of Enugu, which was upheld by the Court of Appeal. The BoT directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to immediately swear in Hon. Udeh-Okoye in accordance with the court’s ruling.
In addition, the BoT urged all party organs, stakeholders, and members to respect the Court of Appeal’s judgment concerning the National Secretary position. The Board also commended the PDP Governors’ Forum, the NWC, and the South-East Executive Committee for their dedication to upholding the party’s constitution and operational guidelines.
Looking ahead, the BoT expressed satisfaction with the scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting set for March 13, 2025, calling it a vital opportunity for strategic deliberations to shape the future of the party.
A significant moment of the meeting was the unanimous passing of a vote of confidence on the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and the Secretary, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, for their leadership in stabilizing the party.
The BoT concluded the meeting by urging all PDP members to remain united, collaborate towards the party’s strengthening, and work collectively to reclaim the leadership position in Nigeria’s political landscape.
This emergency meeting underscores the PDP’s determination to resolve internal conflicts and emerge as a formidable force in Nigerian politics.
