The Enugu State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resumed talks with the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate from the 2023 elections, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, about the potential return of the former member to the PDP fold.
Edeoga, who had been a long-standing member of the PDP, serving as a Member of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, Special Adviser (Legal) to former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters to former President Goodluck Jonathan, had pulled away from the PDP after the 2023 governorship primary to run for governor on the LP platform.
However, after a closed-door meeting at Edeoga’s residence in Enugu, Dr. Martins Chukwunweike, Chairman of the Enugu State PDP, addressed the media, explaining that the meeting was part of his broader agenda to reunite the party and bring back former members.
Chukwunweike emphasized that during the previous elections, the PDP’s dominance in Enugu State was disrupted, and upon his appointment, he discussed with Governor Dr. Peter Mbah the need to reunite the party and restore its former unity. “PDP used to be the only party in Enugu State, and we want to make it that way again,” Chukwunweike said. He added that Edeoga, who had acknowledged the party’s significance in his own political journey, expressed his appreciation for the PDP’s impact on his career.
The Chairman revealed that Edeoga was pleased with the visit and open to rejoining the PDP, but would first consult with his supporters and team before making a final decision. “He has asked us to tell the governor that he has seen all his good works; even the blind man can see the good roads,” Chukwunweike stated, expressing optimism about the future unity of the party.
For his part, Edeoga confirmed that he would take time to consult with his supporters and colleagues before giving a definitive response. “It’s not in the nature of Igbo people to make quick decisions on such important matters,” he said, acknowledging the significance of the meeting and the discussions with PDP leadership.
The meeting concluded with a sense of optimism for future cooperation, as both parties expressed confidence that a reunited PDP would be stronger for the upcoming elections.
